As we wrap up 2021 and head into 2022, I’d like to challenge you to use the New Year as a trigger to reset and refocus on becoming an even more high-performing version of yourself.

What is high performance? 

According to the High Performance Institute, a high performer is someone who “succeeds beyond standard norms over the long-term, while maintaining positive well-being and relationships.”

In a research study conducted by the High Performance Institute in partnership with professors from the University of Pennsylvania and the University of California Santa Barbara, they found that “high performers” consistently shared six habits: clarity, energy, necessity, productivity, influence, and courage.

Reflect and reset

As you reflect on 2021 (and beyond) how do you feel about where you are today?

Here’s the good news. No matter how you feel about where you are today, you likely have the ability to change anything that you don’t like. Before you write me off as too optimistic, stay with me...

Progress, change, growth—whatever you want to call it—happens when you stop doing what you’ve done and try something different. I’m not going to pretend that it’s easy. I simply want to remind you it’s possible. 

If you’re not feeling great about where you’ve been and where you are, let it go for a moment. What would you most ideal 2022 look like? Professionally? Personally? Allow yourself to dream, no limitations. What do you REALLY want? 

Personally speaking…

A few years ago, I made a resolution that changed everything. I had followed a traditional career path, worked really hard to “succeed” but was struggling with burnout. How I approached achieving was simply not working anymore, it had become unsustainable. Although I’ve never been a big fan of resolutions, in 2019 I made a New Year’s resolution to follow my heart, not just my head. It sounds a little silly even as I type this out, but it was game changing. In my own way, I gave myself permission to trust and honor what I truly wanted—not just what was expected of me, and it provided incredible clarity.

There’s a reason why clarity is the first high-performance habit that is explored in a high-performance coaching session. Without clarity of what you truly want and what success looks like to you, it can be challenging to make progress. 

Three years later, I’m happy to report that I’ve had an incredible journey I wouldn’t have thought possible. I am more fulfilled, energized, and successful (based on my definition of success) than I’ve ever been. 

I share this story to give you some hope, if you need it.

Now what? 

I want you to take a look at your high-performance self-audit. Where did you score the lowest? Where did you score the highest? For the attributes in which you scored the lowest, consider this question: what would a 4 or 5 look like in that area? 

When seeking growth, it can be helpful to narrowly focus your efforts in the area that is most impactful. In this case, pick one area of high-performance, define what a higher score looks like, and get started making the necessary changes to improve there. Once you’ve made progress you’re happy with, move on to another area. As a certified high-performance coach, I have found that even the most high-performing people and teams are always in a state of improvement.  

As philosopher Alain de Botton wisely stated, “Anyone who isn’t embarrassed of who they were last year probably isn’t learning enough.”

Cheers to being embarrassed of who you were in 2021 and proud of who you are becoming in 2022!
